Definition: a condition commonly found in the neonate and occurring in utero, where abdominal contents push through an opening the the diaphragm and herniate into the thoracic cavity.

Thoracic cavity + abdomen of foetus
Mother needs to be transferred to tertiary centre for f/u + potential in utero intervention/induction at 39 weeks

Some genetic links
mostly sporadic cases
Vitamin A deficiency link
Other environmental links
exposure to thalidomide, quinine, anticonvulsants
WHEN
4th-10th week post conception
Failed closure of pleuroperitoneal folds
Herniation of abdominal viscera into thoracic cavity
4th-16th week postconception
Normal lung development compromised
WHY
1-4 cases in 10,000 live births
Can lead to serious consequences
Pulmonary hypoplasia
Pulmonary HTN
PPHN
