Physical Function
Provides basic needs - food, clothes, shelter, warmth
Protects the vulnerable - including young, old and with disabilities
Family unit serves to regulate sexual behaviour and it plays an essential role in procreation - ensuring the survival of humans

Emotional Function
Family nurtures children, providing a safe and secure place to discuss feelings and express emotions
A loving, caring home will help children to develop good self esteem which will enable them to become well-adjusted adults capable of forming healthy relationships outside the home environment
Parents should support each other emotionally, providing positive role models for children in their future relationships

Children need consistent discipline which helps them develop a set of values & behaviour patterns that will enable them to mix comfortably in wider society

Economic Function
Primitive societies = family co-operated as an economic unit, with each member contributing to the group

Working family members pay taxes and spend money on goods & services, thereby contributing to the economy

Educational Function

Praise and encouragement and a stimulating environment are important during this period informal education
The home plays a vital role in supporting the work of the school and in helping children to develop to their full potential
