Recycling
3 types of incentives
Mandatory recycling laws
act in many states and city
separate recyclables from other trash
statutory incentive
recycle certain meterials such as cardboard or batteries
forbid the disposal of certain kinds of materials in landfills
have high recycling rate
Curside recycling
1990: a thousand US cities launched program
2008: 11000 cities
1999: all 15 states
Some large cities had achieved recycling rates of 50% or more
convenient way
Cities that not provide curside recycling had recycling rates of 10% or less
Container laws
economic incentive
require a deposit of two to five cents on all beverage containers that could be reused
ban one-time-use beverage bottles and cans
goal: reduce the amount of litter=> it worked
Within 2 years, litter decreased by about 49%
many argue that a national bottle bill is long overdue
Recycling concerns
Techical questions when recycling
plastics
Each type has own chemical makeup => cannot be recycles together
It will be necessary to separate diffirent plastics before reprocessing them
When recycling plastic, the recyclying technology differs from plastic to plastic=> there are many diffirent types of plastic
Economics of recycling
Taxing issues
The grow of demand for product manufactured
Produce a glut of materials in the market because of the step-up commitment to recycling
Each person can be impacted by purchasing products made by recycled materials
Goverment need to encourage recycling efforts
Beverage container waste
disposal of them continues to be a big problem
reduce employment opportunities in domestic recycling industry
increase green house gas and other forms of polution
represent a loss of valuable resourses
manufacturing aluminum cans from used cans requires only 4% of the energy required to make new cans
account for 40% of litter on the road or high way
What you can do
Buy things that are reusable and recyclable => be sure to reuse or recycle them
Buy beverages in refillable glass containers
Buy things that last, keep them as long as possible, and have them repaired
Use rechargeable batteries
Skip the bag
Recycle all the items accepted for recycling
Paper or plastic or plastax?
"Plastax"- tax on plastic bags was first announced in 1999
2002- Ireland launched the program
Revenue from this tax was used for "green fund"
a bag used at checkout counter= 15 euro cents
Before 2002, Ireland used 1,2 billion plastic bags/year=> nonrecycle=> burden on landfill sites
2008- China banned free plastic bags from shops, market...
If a person in New York used one less grocery bag/year => waste can be reduced by about 220000 pounds
