Tx principles
General Tx principles
-
Consider child holistically: age, play, preferences for activity
Fam centered practice: fam's preference for goals, attendance, time and cost, strong role to play in session, X want parents to be cast in corner, want them to be part of session, fam centered talk
Plan for Tx to max generalisation--> selecting targets, provide fam w helping child continue Tx at home
-
-
Accept approximations, providing feedback which leads to gradual success--> moving towards target
Consider prompts/cues you will use to facilitate production eg. cued articulation, verbal, visual, auditory, kinaesthetic
-
-
Scaffolding-scaffold the child for success, let them know what they will need to do, what they already know, have done "These will be easier for you because you've already done them"
Consider the use of slight amplification to increase perceptual saliency: allows sound to be more accessible to child
Keep target words in simple phonotactic structures, be aware of complicated phonetic env.
Structure (ICD, FCD) is usually best targeted first
Ensure that feedback is specific, constructive: nature, name, diff in meaning that has been created
-
Providing additional worksheets, activities for reinforcement
Always make sure child is ready to learn, looking at you. "ready to listen?" My turn to talk, your turn to listen.
Silence is a way to deflect child's attention onto you, encourage them to look at you

4 phase Tx approach
- Familiarisation, production of contrasts
Familiarise child w rule eg. long vs. short (Length of sound): fricatives vs. stops. clusters are considered short
-
Ask child to imitate and then produce target contrasts, X in all therapies though!
-
- Contrasts + interactive play
Imitation of minimal pairs in activities, until 70% accuracy
-
-
- Contrasts w/i communicative contexts
Productions start to be used in more game/play based activities: Pile of cards, have to say which card they want. Child is using the word to play the game. Meaning of word is impt!
-
-
More naturalistic training: maintenance within play, functional activities
Designed to put child in situation of being encouraged to make conversational repairs if this is required
Where child makes errors, say word immediately to child w correct target sounds
