Standards
Science : K-ESS2-2.- Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.
- First draw a picture of a plant on the board. Be sure to include roots, a stem, a flower, and leaves in your drawing. Ask your students to tell you what you've just drawn.
- Ask if anyone knows the different parts of the plant. (roots, stem, flower, and leaves) Asks students What they think each part does?
- By using the “part of a plant” diagram and picture word cards discuss the different parts with your students
- Explain what each part is and what it does. Using diagram and picture word cards.
- Roots hold the plant into the soil. They take in water and minerals to help the plant stay alive.
- Stem is the part that carries water from the roots to the other parts of the plant.
- The Flower helps the plant reproduce, making seeds that will grow into new plants.
- Leaves take in the air and light that a plant needs to live.
- Next, pass out the trays and magnify glasses. Explain to the students that we will be looking at each part of the plant and discussing what we see. Give each student a real flower.
- Show the students the part of a plant- paper towel tube puzzle. Give each student one set. Explain that they will be assessed to prove that they know the order of each part. Have the student do the puzzle.
- Pass out paper and color utensils ( in video we used a big wipe off board). Have the students draw and create their own plant using the different parts they learned. Students will share their drawings and explain the parts they used.
