Harriet Stowe played a big part in the abolitionist movement because of the book she and another teacher wrote. The book was called " Uncle Tom's Cabin", and 300,000 copies were sold to help encourage support for the movement. - Vivian Fan

The abolition movement was one of the most significant social movement in U.S. history: an anti-racist movement, a labor (work) movement, a feminist movement, a free speech movement, an antiwar (opposed the Mexican-American War) movement.
The abolitionist movement was incredibly important because it addressed many issues in one. This made he movement extremely powerful because you had people with different issues in the same movement - Gadea Ezquer-Parejo ;)
This is important to learn about because it kinda started a domino effect of social movements that lead us to today

After the fugitive slave act went into motion, many slaves flocked to Canada. There was no slavery in Canada so there were no slave catchers. In Canada, black people were allowed to vote, own land, stand on a jury, and do almost everything that they couldn't do in the United States. -Aine Alexander-Mullen
Frederick Douglas is considered the Martin Luther King JR of the abolitionist movement. That makes me wonder if MLK was inspired by the work of Frederick D.

There were many safe houses along the borders of the states, to help slaves get to where they needed to go. These safe houses helped nearly 20,000 people get to saftey. -Vivian Fan

William Lloyd Garrison saw blacks and whites as equals. He also called for women's rights, which was considered more radical than ending slavery. This caused a split in the Abolitionist Movement.

The gag rule ment the congress could not discuss slavery and abolitionism. This probably set back the abolitionists because the most important people who could make a difference to help abolish slavery were banned from discussing it. That would be like if I wanted to get a pet dog but my parents banned talking about getting a pet, that would make it impossible to grow and fight for my idea.
It is very interesting how people who were trying to free black people viewed them as inferior to white people (themselves).
The "mission" went from only one person fighting for one issue and became a group mission with different struggles that needed to be solved.Gadea
William Lloyd Harrison was a famous abolitionist who believed that slavery should be ended, and that blacks should have the same rights as whites. He also supported the women's rights movement.
