Mechanism of action
Is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist
Inhibits transmembrane influx of calcium ions
Into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle
Binds to dihydropyridine and nondihydropyridine binding sites
Depending upon movements of intracellular calcium ions
Amlodipine is peripheral arterial vasodilator
That acts directly on vascular smooth muscle
To cause reduction in peripheral resistance
And reduction in blood pressure
