Hyperadrenocortism in Dogs
Types of Hyperadrenocortism
Spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism
đź“ť excessive corticotropin(adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH) secretion
Pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism
Functional Adrenal Tumor (FAT)
đź“ť this causes excessive amounts of cortisol independent of pituitary control that suppress secretion of corticotropin releasing hormone and ACTH leading to atrophy of normal adrenocortical tissue.
Clinical signs
Polyuria and polydipsia
Alopecia, hyperpigmentation
Lethargy, panting
Weight gain
Distended urinary bladder
Diagnosis
Complete blood count to check for elevated white blood cells components
Serum biochemistryto check for elevated liver enzyme
Urinalysis to check for proteinuria and low specific gravity
Treatment
Surgery to remove adrenocortical adenoma or nonmetastasized carcinoma
Medical treatment involving Mitotane to destroy glucocorticoids secreting cells of adrenal cortex
Cushing’s disease that affects middle aged and geriatric dogs
