Life in the comune
organization
comune quite competitive between themselves often wanted to take over surrounding areas. they some times had Palio-game to fight each other.
society was made up of:
- magnati= nobles
- popolo grasso= borgeoisiemerchants and bankers
- popolo minuto= traders, artisans and workers
- clergy-church
power
- citizens had to elect two consoli who governed the city for a year.
- the richest families would fight each other for the power.
- a podestà was elected for a year. the podesàwould come from another city as they tough that it would do the best for the city.
Italy was a good location because of the marine republics that are: Amalfi, Genoa, Venice and Pisa. That became important towns.
They exchanged goods with the Byzantine Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire.
they were independent as they were republics. they depended on their merchants.
between 1050 and 1100. Italian cities had to expand their walls because of the population increasing. the cities became the center of economic life so consequently exchange took place and money was a useful good.

Birth of the comune
between the 11th and 12th centuries the German HRE and bishops, were very weak so quite unable to govern cities.so from the 11th century many started to govern them selves. to became totally independent (gave them selves laws) they were called comune.
in northern and central Italy the comune had a great power.
They:
- Administered justice
- Made money
- Collected taxes
- Called citizens to fight
- medieval cities had:
- walls
- a central square
- public and religious buildings
- cathedral
medieval houses were made of wood and had a fire to keep them warm. windows were closed with a material like oil paintings. in 13th century they started using chimneys. people were full of lice.
personal hygene was not great death reat was high. women often died during birth and children from illness.
