indirect displacement - perhaps more insidious, in many neighborhoods, there are pockets of protected units from gentrification, rent control, in those few units, people can actually remain in place. Indirect displacement refers to the sense of isolation that people feel when their family and friends have been displaced. Their social network erodes, but also the influx of high end retails they cant afford. It is aesthetically appealing, but they arent able to enjoy the changes. Also, what happens over time, even people in the protected units decide to leave. While it may be a choice and their own decision, their own agency, theyre leaving because their own community feels unfamiliar.
