Causes
- Most rural areas don't have enough institutes
- Institutes don't have the right equipment, neither the right conditions to educate.
- Some teachers in rural areas are not prepared enough.
- The education system is centralized, the structure is planned in the big cities and then it's developed in rural areas.
Social Impact
- 50% of the illiteracy rate in Colombia by 2017, were people that live in rural areas. (Dane, 2017)
- Increase poverty. As there is a lack of education, people that live in rural areas tend to stay in poverty.
- Due to children and teenagers not going to schools, there's more child exploitations
- Increase violence and crime rate.
Attemped solutions
- The Colombian government has developed programs and initiatives in order to reduce the education gap between urban and rural areas.
- Alliances between private and public institutions in order to cover more areas.
- ONG's and foundations that has workshops with kids of rural areas and encourages them to have a better future.
Ideal solutions
- Social campaigne to make people aware of this issue.
- Training for teachers not only of tools and equipment, but also in how to handle kids and teenagers that may have family problems or are exploited at home.
- Raise funds for institutions.
- An initiative where university students go to these areas and give talks about education's value and how they can have opportunities to keep studying.
