What was the impact of George Grenville's acts and customs reforms on the cause of the American Revolution?
IMPACT OF SUGAR ACT:
In addition to lowering the tax on sugar and enforcing collection of taxes, the new law also affected the trade of certain commodities.
-
By increasing the expense of many manufactured products and reducing exports to non-British markets, it significantly disrupted the economy of the American colonies.
Though, Sugar Act successfully reduced smuggling.
Vessels sailing to the colonies were required to move through Britain, unload their cargo, pay duties on it, reload it and sail to the colonies. These policies raised business costs and damaged local manufacturing.
IMPACT OF STAMP ACT:
The legislation levied a direct tax on all materials printed for commercial and legal use in the colonies, from newspapers and pamphlets to playing cards and dice.
The colonies reacted in protest, they boycotted British products and merchants.
While the Stamp Act employed a tactic that was a common fundraising strategy in England, in the colonies it stirred a storm of outrage.
By virtue of the stamp act, they raised the issue of taxation without representation and established societies in the colonies to mobilize against the British government and nobles.
Helped plant seeds for a much broader campaign against the British Government and the eventual independence war
