Emphasize the important of innate, biological drives that the individual must control to adapt to society
Id and Ego
individual prone to conflicts between id and ego.
Conflicts resolved when ego learns to accept and tolerate with id.
These impulses have tendency to be suppressed (in unconscious) and tend to be reenacted in client life later.
Conflict will be repeated again in the process called “transference”
Importance of Transference
assist clients in understanding their problems and making changes in their life
Helped client to see how their interpersonal conflict influencing the relationship with therapist, how conflict developed and cause and effect of the conflict.
Client become aware of the conflict, make choice about interpersonal style (way to solve issue) and behave consciously.
Importance of Counter- Transference
the therapists emotional reaction to the client.
Freud against this idea.
But STPP view counter transference as providing information about how client behavior affect others.
