A TEAM APPROACH TO HEALTH CARE
TYPES OF TEAMS
REGULAR TEAMS
Teams that train and work together.
TEMPORARY TEAMS
More common in voluntary EMS systems - teams that interchange. You could end up working with someone you don't know.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Teams that have specific, focused training for various roles.
Examples:
HazMat Team
EMS Bike Team
Fire Team
GROUPS VS TEAMS
Groups consists of various health care Providers working individually and independently to help the patient.
Teams consist of a group of health care Providers that are assigned specific roles and work side by side with one another under a designated leader
DEPENDENT, INDEPENDENT, AND INTERDEPENDENT
DEPENDENT
Individuals are told what to do and how to do it by a designated leader. Often times, dependent teams find it hard to function in environments that are uncontrolled because they are so used to control from their leader
INDEPENDENT
Individuals are responsible for their own area, whether that be a task or a designated space. Individuals can receive support from their group leader but do not have to wait for instruction to act
INTERDEPENDENT
Individuals are assigned to a particular area or task, but everyone share equal responsibility, accountability, and a common goal. Interdependent groups function as a true team.
ASSISTING WITH ALS SKILLS
Although EMTs are not able to perform ALS skills, we can assist our ALS Provider with performing the skills they need to help the patient
ASSISTING WITH PLACEMENT OF ADVANCED AIRWAYS
PATIENT PREPARATION
Oxygenation is the first step in the ET tube placement process. The more oxygen available in the alveoli, the longer the patient can maintain during the intubation process - this is called pre-oxygenation
EQUIPMENT SET-UP
You can help to prepare the equipment for your ALS Provider. Have the equipment prepped and ready for use.
PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE
Knowing the process of intubation as an EMT will help you to better assist your ALS provider. There is a great mnemonic that is used to list the steps of ET tube placement: BE MAGIC
B - BVM preoxygenation
E - evaluate for airway difficulties
M - manipulate the patient
A - attempt first-pass intubation
GI - use a supraglottic airway if unable ot intubate
C - confirm successful intubation/correct any issues
VASCULAR ACCESS
An EMT can help assist the ALS provider obtain vascular access via IV by prepping the patient (alcohol swabbing the area of puncture), setting up the equipment (laying out IV supplies, spiking the IV bag), and monitoring the patient after (ensuring the IV site stays clean, in-place)
