Reproductive System Ana Cendejas Period: 7th
Major Functions
Functions in production of female gamete (ovum or egg) and preparation for support of developing embryo during pregnancy
Function to produce and disseminate a large quantity of male gamete
Anatomy of the male reproductive structures & functions
Testes- primary sex organ
Sperm- male gamete
Vas deferens- carries sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
Epididymis- matures and store sperm cells
Spermatogenesis- production of sperm cells
Urethra- carries both urine and sperm
Semen- provide transport medium for sperm
Seminal vesicle- contains fructose vitamin c and other substances that nourish and activates the sperm
Prostate gland- secretes a milky fluid that helps activate sperm
Penis- tubular organ through which distal portion urethra passes
Bulbourethral gland- lubricates penis for penetration just before ejaculation
Scrotum- divided sac of skin outside the abdomen that holds the testes
Female Hormones
Gonadotropin releasing hormone- by hypothalamus stimulate anterior pituitary gland to release LH and FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone- development and maturation of primary follicle into secondary follicle
Luteinizing hormone- spike trigger ovulation of the most mature follicle
Inhibin- decrease
Estrogen- Stimulate growth of uterus, vaginal, necessary for ovum maturation
Progesterone- stimulates the development and growth of the lining of the uterine walls to get ready for implantation
Female hormonal cycle
Ovarian cycle
Follicular phase- beginning of menstruation until ovulation
Ovulation- Day 14. Releases the oocyte
Luteal phase- follicle expels the oocyte the empty shell becomes corpus luteum
Uterine cycle
Menstruation- decline of estrogen and progesterone
Proliferative phase- estrogen stimulates growth of blood vessels of the endometrium causing it to double in thickness
Secretory phase- uterus becomes ready for pregnancy
Menopause- menstrual cycle ceases
Disorders
Bacterial Vaginosis
Clamydia
Gonorrhea
Hepatitis
HIV/AIDS
Human Papillomavirus
Syphilis
Trichomoniasis
Pubic Lice
Scabies
Anatomy sperm
Head- contains nucleus with DNA inside
Acrosome- anterior portion of head, contains enzyme needed to penetrate the female egg
Midpiece- contains mitochondria that provide energy, ATP, for journey through the female reproductive system
Flagella- only human cell with a tail
Propels spermatocyte- sperm cells
Anatomy of female reproductive structures & functions
Ovaries- primary sex organ
OOgenesis- process of producing ova/ovum
Uterus- receive a fertilized egg
Uterine fallopian tube- Receive the ovulated oocyte
Fimbriae- finger-like projections at the distal end that receive the oocyte from the ovary
Vagina- birth canal
External genitalia
Mons pubis- fatty pad over the pubic symphysis
Labia-skin folds around vaginal opening
Mammary gland- produce milk
Vestibule- area enclosed by labia majora
Clitoris- contains erectile tissue
Male Hormones
Luteinizing Hormone- stimulates seminiferous tubules to secrete testosterone
Follicle stimulating hormone- sperm production and maturation and inhibin
Gonadotropin releasing hormone- released by hypothalamus to release LH and FSH
Testosterone- stimulates reproductive organ development and sex drive
Inhibin- released by the testes when high levels of testosterone are presents to stop production of LH and FSH
