History
Common in young dancers, ice skaters and runners.
Associated w/ repeated inversion sprain; tendons stretched and inflamed; unstable 4th and 5th metatarsal

Men and women > 40 but also younger athletes
Inflammation of collagen microtears at origin of plantar fascia, chronic increased tensile
Symptoms
Tight gastrocnemius
Pain w/ 1st steps in the morning or after a period of rest.
Pain w/ prolonged WB.
Tender to palpation over the distal to medial tubercle.
Flatfooted gait increased WB on lateral border.
Pain w/ or w/o limited ROM in DF or 1st MTP ext.

Trauma
bruising and swelling, pain on palpation, impaired ambulation
Diagnosis
Sprain
Lateral sprain - due to inversion and PF trauma pain on palpation, impaired ambulation, hematoma, swelling within 2 hours
Grade 2: partial tear of ATFL, overstretch/partial tear of CFL

Grade 1: most common ankle injury, overstretch the ATFL
