What is WS?

Prevalence ~ 1 in 20,000 (Morris et al., 1988) to 1 in 7,500 (Stromme et al., 2002)
Characteristic facial features:
Full prominent lips, wide mouth, small/widely spaced teeth, star-like iris pattern, prominent ear lobes, short nose
Personality profile

Tendency to fixate on faces, smile freq, be overly friendly w/ strangers, lack social judgment

Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) test for ELN deletion is routinely used to confirm clinical diagnoses

Cog Profile

Generally accepted that numerical and visuospatial skills are significantly impaired (relative to deve level)
Some claim that lang, social cog, and face processing are intact (but controversial)

Tager-Flusberg and Sullivan (2000) found that ToM development is delayed relative to CA and MA, BUT...
Only 24% of WS (aged 4;6-8;7( passed both tasks, and they performed sig less well than age and IQ matched control groups (not much evidence for an intact ToM module)

Contrast with face processing is ASD, which is significantly poorer than in WS
Ps shown an image of a target face, then shown a selection of 6 faces and asked to pick the one that matched the target

Language ability
Rossen et al (1995): WS presents a remarkable juxtaposition of impaired and intact mental capacities: linguistic functioning is preserved in WS while problem solving ability and visuospatial cognition are impaired
Pinker (1999): Overall, the genetic double dissociation is striking ... the genes of one group of children [w/ SLI] impair their grammar while sparing their intelligence; the genes of another group impair their grammar

Phonology WS
Laing et al. (2002) assessed 15 individuals with WS (M age 15;1) and 15 TD control children (M age 6;9), matched on verbal mental age and reading age
Battery of 11 phonological awareness/abilities tasks including:
- Rhyme detection - indicate which of three words rhyme with a stimulus word
- Rhyme production - supply words/nonwords that rhyme with stimulus words
- Phoneme deletion - remove the initial phoneme from a single-syllable word (e.g. what would "meat" sound like without the / m/?)

However, the WS group performed sig less well on the phoneme delection tasks
Thus, overall, phonology was commensurate with other verbal abilities (but not chronological age)
Grammar
If true, grammar should be a performance peak and age-appropriate, but this is not what the evidence shows

Studies show that performance of the TROG and other receptive grammar tests is
- No better than expected on the basis of non-verbal or overall mental age (therefore not age appropriate)
- Significantly poorer than receptive vocabulary
Thus, grammar neither a relative strength in language profile, nor age-appropriate in WS
Semantics
Receptive vocabulary was significantly better amongst adolescents with WS than would be predicted by age or non-verbal intelligence
