Chacko et al. (2014)
RCT of Cogged working memory training in school aged children with ADHD: replication in diverse sample using a control condition

DV = teacher ratings, objective measures, psychometric indices
CWMT ps = sig greater improvements in non/verbal WM, no gains in WM storage + processing/manipulation

Assessment/Treatment
-
Behavioural genetics
-
Heritable: Across 18 twin studies, mean heritability = 0.77 (Biederman, 2005)
-
-
Molecular Genetics
Other genes inconsistently implicated on long arms of chromosomes 7, 9, 16, 20 & 14
-
-
-
One variant of both DRD4 and DRD5 genes - both genes have an established role in encoding for subtypes of DA receptors
-
Two genes, in particular, have been consistently implicated in ADDA
Treatment
NIMH Multi-model treatment of ADHD trail (1992)
- 579 cases randomly assigned to 14 months: community care/behavioural management/Ritalin/behavioural management + Ritalin
-
All groups improved, but a) medication only and b) combined therapy groups improved more (d = 0.5 to 0.7)

Multiple Pathways?
Castellenos et al. (2006)
- Inattention caused by deficit in cool EFs
- Hyperactivity-impulsivity caused by deficit in hot EFs
-
Zelazo & Muller (2002) distinguish:
- "Hot" affective aspects of EF -- associated with ventromedial prefrontal cortex
- "Cool" purely cognitive aspects of EF - associated with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
-
Defining ADHD?
Two dimensions
Innattention
-
Often appear "spaced out", easily confused, lethargic
-
Inattentive, problems keeping mind on one topic, distracted by irrelevant sights and sounds
-
Criteria for diagnosis: >=6 (<= 5 for adolescents/adults) symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, or both in > 1 setting (e.g. home & school) for <= 6 months
Three main ADHD presentations:
- Hyperactive/impulsive
- Inattentive
- Combined
