An older male patient with stomach cancer recently had a feeding tube inserted into his alimentary canal to bypass the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. He also tells us the he had his gall bladder removed several years ago. What does this snow mean in terms of his diet, food preparation and possible effects of his digestive process?
Upstream Causes:
His mouth is not participating in ingestion so no saliva is being added to broken down food. Which helps begin digestion.
The main organ not participating is the stomach. Hydrochloric acid cant be added to food to break down huge amounts of food.
The things being bypassed in this patient are basically everything up to the small intestine including the mouth.

Whatever is given to him would need to be broken down as far as possible before being fed to him. His digestive system is already too weak to handle heavy loads. So we as healthcare providers can handle it for him.
