The French treasury was drained due to long years of war, there was financial instability in the country.
To meet the expenses, the ruler was forced to increase the taxes.
There were three estates.The first and second estates consisted of the clergy and nobility, who enjoyed certain privileges by birth. The third estate consisted of peasants, businessmen, artisans, etc.

Another cause for the French Revolution was economic causes. As the population had increased drastically, there was scarcity of food. Food grains were in high demand and the prices shot up.

French philosophers spread the ideas of liberty, fraternity and equality.
The third estate were not pleased as first and second estates were not made to pay taxes. So, the third estate formed the National Assembly, and took the tennis court oath that they will develop a fair taxation system.

Robespierre wanted change to happen quickly. He was the leader of the Jacobins, and he seized power over the National Assembly.
The Reign of Terror commenced under Robespierre. Thoysands were tried in the Revolutionary Tribal and executed.
