Diagnostic surgery
Diagnostic surgery such as biopsy is usually perfomed to obtain a tissue sample for analysis of cells suspected to be malignant, biopsy is often taken from the actual tumor

Palliative surgery
When cure is not possible, the goals of the treatment are to make the patient as comfortable as possible to promote a satisfying and productive life as long as possible

The nurse should be able to answer questions which maybe asked by the family members regarding radiation therapy

The nurse informs the family members about the restrictions placed on visitors if radioactive implant is used
Patient also need to understand their own role before,during and after the procedure
Radiation therapy
In radiation therapy,ionizing radiation is used to interupt cellular growth, radiation may be used to cure the cancer as in Hodgkin's disease and thyroid carcinomas
