Definition
It is the infection of the auricle and the external ear canal.
Causes
Fungi micro-organisms

Pathophysiology
Occur as a furuncle associated with hair follicles
The external ear canal is erythematous
May occur as the pustule
It can be filled with pus and flakes of skin debris
Nursing intervention
A cotton ball can be covered in petroleum jelly and placed in the ear as a barrier to water contamination
Infection can be prevented using antiseptic otic preparations after swimming
Patients should avoid swimming and they should not allow water to enter when showering
The nurse should teach the patient not to clean the external auditory canal with cotton-tipped applicators
