Tricking the eavesdropping Beatrice
Don Pedro
Don Pedro is the Firestone who suggested that Benedick and Beatrice should be a couple. He also planed the incident in the garden where he leads the ruse to decieve Benedick
Don Pedro is the one who asked Hero to fool Beatrice
"and you too gentle hero?" Act 1 scene 1 (line 282)
Margaret
Margaret played a small yet crucial part in the scheme, she fetched Beatrice to eavesdrop on Hero and Ursula's Conversation
"I'll make her come I warrant you, presently." scene 1 (line 14)
Hero
Hero is directly involved in tricking Beatrice. She is the one who devised the plan.
"Our talk must only be of Benedick..." scene 1 (17-23)
Ursula
Ursula Was directly involved in Hero's plan, she praised Benedick
"So rare a gentleman Benedick" scene 1(line 91).
Beatrice
Beatrice is the victim of the incident, she falls for Hero's elaborate plan and wants to return Benedick's love.
"What fire is in mine ears?Can this..." scene 1 (107-116)
The Gulling of Benedick
Benedick
Benedick is the victim of this scheme and he didn't doubt Leonato's word. He convinces himself that he is in love with Beatrice.
"the white bearded fellow speaks it: knavery cannot sure hide himself in such reverence" Act 2 scene 3 (line 106-107)
claudio
Claudio plays but a small part in the plan. He helps Leonato by acting as a witness of Beatrice's love and also generally keeps the conversation going.
"Then down upon her knees she falls, weeps, sobs..." Act 2 scene 3 (line 126-128)
Leonato
Leonato plays a crucial role in the ruse. His word is more convincing since he is Beatrice's father figure. Benedick believes in the ploy because of Leonato
"she loves him with an enraged affection, it is past the infinite of thought" Act 2 scene 3 (line 90-91)
Balthasar
Balthasar sets the atmosphere in the garden.
"Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more..."act 2 scene 3 (line 53-78)
Don John's plot to destroy Hero's reputation
Don John
Don John is the one who convinces Don John and Claudio to come check out hero's balcony. He wants revenge against young Claudio.
"The lady is disloyal."Act 3 scene 2 (line 76)
Borachio
Borachio is the Mastermind of this operation. He received 1000 ducats in exchange for his services though later he endangers Don John by getting caught by the watch when drunk
Borachio [drunk]: "I have tonight wooed/ Margaret, the Lady Hero's gentlewoman, by the name of Hero" Act 3 scene 3 (line 118-120)
