Anencephaly
Definition
It is a condition that is present at birth, it affects the brain and skull bones ,with this condition the brain is not fully formed ,it often lacks part or all of the cerebrum
Causes
Genetic problems
Chromosomal abnormalities
Opening in the neutral tube maybe left exposed
Environmental toxins
Lack of folic acid intake of the mother
Clinical manifestations
Missing bones on the front and sides of the head
Large areas of brain missing
No bones on the back of the head
Folding of the ears
Split in the roof of the mouth
Congenital heart defects
Diagnostic findings
Prenatal ultrasound
Amniocentesis
Blood tests
Pathophysiology
Fusion begins at the hindbrain-cervical junction first proceeds rostally and then caudally, the anterior and posterior ends(neuropores) closes to form spinal cord ,depending on the point of interuption in neutral tube formation develops NTDS may affect the brain.
Nursing care plan
Diet must be rich in folic acid
regular ultrasound check-up
Encourage compliance to pre-natal check-ups
treatment
There is no specific treatment or cure for anencephaly, treatment is supportive this means efforts are made to keep the baby as comfortable as possible
Health education
The mother should know the reason for the visit and what she wants to happen
Know why a new medicine is prescribed and how it will help the child
Know why a test procedure is recommended and what the results could mean
The nurse should stress the importance of follow up dates
