DEFINITION
Is an inherited form of vision loss.
Pathophysiology
Is a mutation of mithochondrial transmitted -
From mother to offsprings.
Results to degeneration of retina ganglion.
Cause
It is caused by changecin mithochondrial DNA.
Genetic changes causes death of cells in optic nerve.
Diagnostic tests
Opthalmoscopy
Eye examination
Loss of ability to complete visual task.
A growing dense central scotoma.
Severe loss of visual acuity.
Development of optic atrophy.
Blurred vision
Treatment
Dose of idebenone may be considered
Genetic counseling
Provisional of visual aids.
Nursing management
Anxiety
Give support to the patient to instill hope.
Health educate the patient about the conditon to alley -
Advice a patient to be compliant into treatment regime-
