Achilles' heel
Background
Achilles was predicted to die young so his mother, while holding him by the heel, dipped him in a magical river. He grew to be a successful warrior. When he was shot in the heel he died because his mother didn't dip his heel in the river.
Uses
We use the phrase, "Achilles' heel," as another word for weakness.
Adonis
Background
A goddess Myrrha gave birth to a remarkably handsome child, Adonis, but she was turned into a tree. Adonis was looked after by lots of gods and goddesses but his favourite was Aphrodite. Adonis died in Aphrodite's arm.
Uses
We use the phrase, "Adonis," when referring to someone extremely handsome/ beautiful.
Adam and Eve
Background
Adam and Eve lived in the garden of Eden, a garden created by God. One day a serpent came and told Eve to eat fruit she was forbidden to eat, so she ate and so did Adam. God was angry so he banished them from the garden.
Uses
We use the phrase, "Eden," when we are describing a beautiful place, a paradise.
We use the phrase "serpent," when we are describing someone evil or not very nice

Background
When Alice follows a rabbit down a rabbit hole she finds a whole new world containing lots of strange people, such as the mad hatter, the Cheshire cat, the evil Queen of hearts and a door mouse who hosts a tea party!
Uses
We use the phrase, "Going down a rabbit hole," when we are describing a change into something wonderful or terrible.
We use the phrase, "Grinning like a Cheshire cat," when we are describing some one who is grinning sometimes a cheeky grin.
We use the phrase, "As mad as a hatter," when we are describing someone who is acting a bit mad or crazy.
Tower of Babel
Background
Lots of people joined together to make a tall tower to reach the heavens. But God didn't want this so he changed the language to lots of different languages.
Uses
We use the phrase, " Tower of Babel," when describing confusion or lots of people talking at the same time.

Background
1982 is a book by George Orwell. In this book there is a country called Oceania. This country is ruled by a totalitarianism government. The leader is called "Big brother," and he spies on the citizens through the telescreen. Also there are thought police that try to read peoples thoughts. Sometimes people are taken to room 101 where they are faced by their worst fear.
Uses

We use the phrase, "Big brother," when referring to an extremely controlling person or organisation.
We use the phrase, "The thought police," when referring to someone who is trying to control how we think or speak.
Cupid
Background
Cupid, also called Eros, is the God of Love. He shoots people with arrows so they fall in love with the next person they see. Cupid is usually depicted as a young boy, with wings and a bow and arrow.
Uses
We use the phrase, "Playing Cupid," when referring to someone matchmaking or setting people up together leading to love.
We use the phrase, "struck by Cupid's arrow," when referring to someone who has fallen in love.
