Fetus surface
1.lies adjacent to the amniotic cavity, lined by 2 membrane, the amnion and chorion
2.fetus connected to the placenta by an umbilical cord, inserted in the centre
3.fetal vessel radiates out in all directions, from the centre outwards(umbrella-like)
-
- The chorion-rough,fibrous,opaque outer surface, adherent to the decidua vera
6.Amnion-tough,shinny inner membrane which extend beyond the placental edge which forms the sac that holds the fetus and amniotic fluid.
The umibilical cord
-
made up of wharton jelly (to prevents compressions of the blood vessel and ensures continued nourishment of the fetus) which sometimes form false knot
Has AVA-2 artery (return blood containing waste from fetal circulation back to the placenta) and 1 vein (bigger lumen to carry nutrient and oxygen rich blood to the fetus)
Abnormal length of cord-more than 100cm is associated with increased risk of fetal entanglement and strangulation, knots and prolapse of the cord
-
Mother surface
-
-
3.made up of chorionic villi, arragned in cotyledons (20 cents coins) separated by sulci or furrows
- smooth area but sometimes gritty when covered by lime salt or fibrin deposits-post dates / has rough and spongy appearance and is divided into several cotyledons
Amniotic fluid (liquor)

-
functions
- allows growth and free movement of fetus and balanced pressure exerted during contraction
