- some pass data immediately to omputer so it can be processed
- others store data, transferring it when connected to computer
temperature senser
takes reading of surrounding temperature. can be used in thermometer, mobile phone, food industry, metal industry etc.

can be used in street light, car, mobile phone
when computer receive reading below a pre-set threshold, a signal is sent to turn on the bulb. when another signal is above threshold, a further signal is sent to turn off the bulb.

gas sensor
determine whether there's been a lea of harmful gas. they are used as part of devices to improve safty, for example natural gas and carbon monoxide.
a sensor by itself isn't very useful, but once it is used in a device, it become more useful. in a sensor detecting natural gas, a visual display is there to indicate rise in nearby concentration
