Causes

-
-
Irritants such as smoke, dust,
fumes, liquids
-
-
-
Nursing intervention
-
respond quickly to avoid complications such as noncardiogenic pulmonary edema (NCPE) and respiratory arrest.
-
-
Nursing care plan
Assess airway for patency-Maintaining patent airway is always the first priority, especially in cases like trauma, acute neurological decompensation, or cardiac arrest.
-
-
Patient will maintain clear, open airways as evidence by normal breath sound
Pathophysiology
involves the involuntary and forceful contraction of laryngeal muscles, which results from the depolarization of the superior laryngeal nerve.
Contraction of the laryngeal muscles results in vocal cord adduction, complete airway obstruction, and impaired ventilation.
Definition
