Risedronate (actonel)
Mechanism of action
By slowing the rate at which bone is dissolved
It blocks the dissolution of bone
Strengths bone by inhibiting bone reabsorption by osteoclasts
Indications
For treatment and prevention of osteoporosis
Nursing considerations
Patient not to lie down for 30 minutes after dose
To avoid oesphageal irritation
Calcium supplements or laxatives to be taken at different times
Contraindications
Hyperparathyrodism
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Children
Dysphagia
Alchalasia
Side effects
Headache
Flu dymptoms
Stomach pain
Muscle pain
Upset stomach
Diarrhea, constipation
Joint or back pain
Route of administration
Administered orally
Storage conditions
