Indications
Shock
Post-OP low cardiac output
Used in cardio pulmonary resuscitation
To treat life-threatening hypotension
Cardiac arrest
Mechanism of action
Increase blood pressure
Also has some B1 receptor agonist activity
Predominantly stimulates a1 receptors to peripheral constriction
Which results on positive inotropic effect on the heart
It is a vasoconstroctor
Nursing considerations
Cardiac monitors should be used on patients receiving iv infusions
Resuscitation trolley and defibrillator should be nearby during infusion
Monitor blood pressure and apical pulse continuously
Side effects
Slow heart rate
Hypertension
Arrhythmias
Confusion
Anxiety
Short ness of breath
Headache
Nausea and vomiting
Storage conditions
2-8 degrees for 24 hours after dilution
Contraindications
Blockage of blood vessels
Increase in carbon dioxide in blood
Blood clots
Decreased cardiac output in tissues
Hypertension
Decreased blood level
Peripheral vascular thrombosis
Hypovolemic shock
Route of administration
Intravenously via a central venous pressure
