NARCOLEPSY
DEFINITION
• chronic sleeping disorder
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
• disorder of unknown cause
• usually affects the old
• characterised by
• overwhelming daytime drowsiness
• and sudden attacks of sleep
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
• excessive daytime sleepiness
• sudden loss of muscle tone
• sleep paralysis
• hallucinations
• obstructive sleep apnea
• insomnia
• restless legs syndrome
CAUSES
• exact cause unknown
• might be infection
DIAGNNOSTIC TESTS
• sleep history
• sleep records
• polysomnography
• multiple sleep latency test
• hypocretin test
COMPLICATIONS
• public misunderstanding of the condition
• interference with intimate relationship
• physical harm
• obesity
TREAMENT
• there is no cure
• only lifestyle modifications
• and medication to help manage
NURSING CARE PLAN
• ensure patient is a safe environment
• allay stress and anxiety
• advise resting periods
• ensure patient takes prescribed medication as prescribed
• allow the patient to talk out
• provide factual information about condition
HEALTH EDUCATION
• advice patient to stick to a schedule
• advice to take naps regularly
• advice to avoid nicotine and alcohol
• advice to exercise regularly
PHARMACOLOGY
• stimulants e.g. nuvigil
• selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors e.g. prozac
• tricyclic antidepressents e.g. tofralin
• sodium oxybate e.g xyrem
