Blood Vessels
Diagrams
Veins
Arteries
Capillaries
Description of the functions
Veins
To carry blood from the tissues to the atria of the heart at low pressure
Arteries
To carry blood at high pressure from the heart ventricles to the tissues of the body and lungs
Capillaries
Exchange materials between the cells in tissues and blood travelling at low pressure
Explanation of the relationship between the structure and functions of the blood vessels
Arteries
Thin arterioles: to control blood flow
Narrowed lumen: to maintain high blood pressure
Expandable and contractible elastic tissues: absorb shock forces being forced upon the wall
Thick layer of collagen: to prevent rupture when blood travels at a high pressure
Capillaries
Thin layer of endothelium: to minimize diffusion distance for oxygen and carbon dioxide, this increases efficiency of gas and nutrient exchange
Narrowed Lumen: squeeze red blood cells against the endothelium to improve transfer of oxygen
Narrowed Lumen: slows down blood flow which prevents damages of the capillary walls.
Veins
Thin wall and wide Lumen: to maximize the amount of blood flow
Contains valves: prevent backflow of blood, ensures that the blood flows towards the heart in the right direction
Surrounded by skeletal muscles: compresses veins and pushes the blood along
