FOREIGN BODIES OF EXTERNAL EAR
DEFINITION
Object placed on external ear causing possible harm.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Irritation of external ear.
Inflammatory fluid discharge.
Inflammation of the ear.
Decrease in hearing.
Pain on affected sight.
Pressure on affected side.
CAUSES
Invading the ear accidentally.
Small objects placed in the ear.
Scratching external auditory canal with match sticks
Cotton pledgets placed on external auditory canal.
Rubber ear plugs used by swimmers
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
The osseous portion is sensitive.
It is bony lined with periosteum and skin.
The skin provides little cushion over underlying periosteum.
External auditory canal is cartilaginous.
The canal narrows at the cartilaginous junction.
Foreign bodies can become impacted here.
Thus difficulty to remove is increased.
NURSING INTERVENTIONS
Monitor temperature related to infection continuously.
Place patient in a calm environment relieving anxiety.
Reassure the patient of the effectiveness of treatment.
Administer prescribed anaesthesia preoperatively.
Position patient correctly for irrigation.
Administer prescribed antibiotics accordingly.
Check for signs of bleeding on affected area.
COLLABORATIVE MANAGEMENT
Using modified forceps to reach foreign body.
Gentle suction to suck out the object.
Pulling pinna thus rolling out foreign body.
Irrigation of the canal to flush out the canal.
PHARMACOLOGICAL THERAPY
Anaesthetic for killing insects.
Lidocaine
Antibiotics to prevent infection.
Rocephine
Corticosteroids for inflammation.
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Direct looking into the ear with otoscope
ENT examination by specialist.
