Clinical Ax techniques- CELF-P2
Ax for 'hard to assess' child
Shy, quiet child
Slow down the pace
Give more time to warm up
Try starting w receptive procedures that require little speech, expressive lang
Obsv: be playful eg. misname common objects
Puppets: shy doll-child uses puppets to pretend to be shy doll's parents and asks the doll qns
Noncompliant, hyperactive, impulsive
Tone of firm control
May need to ask parent/caregiver to wait in obsv room rather than w/i child's view: how do you think this is going? would you be happy if we gave this a go?
May need to make Ax session longer
Avoid using lang that gives child power eg. USE do you want to? is it okay if?
Remove extraneous stimuli from env
Be flexible: may not insist that child sits at table, may need to do some Ax on floor-need to subtests and discontinue rule
Freq breaks
Complete Ax in small chunks
Clinical tips
Setting up env: seating
May need to be flexible: knowing when to abandon, knowing when you adjusted the test (but need to note down if you did)
Know why you are doing the Ax and what you are assessing
Ax can give info about strengths!
Although age equivalents can be useful in describing a child's lang skills, there are limitations to their use. So DO NOT use age equivalents as primary scores for diagnosis
Reward systems for young children, increasing motivation to complete Ax eg. Tanya's method of smiley face to fill up tube
Eg of reward systems: can make sth w ice cream sticks when talking to parent, puzzles (big chunky ones), duplo train tracks. Put ball in to watch it fall down. Wind up toys, sounds. Older children: chart system. Let's see how we go, I'll let you know after this.
Standardised Ax
Why do we use?
Traditionally used for to determine eligibility
May be good for providing information about areas that require further testing
Be mindful
If used alone, may not provide enough info
May only assess one domain, focus on the presence or absence of isolated, discrete skills
Measure performance in highly constrained env
X provide info about a child's lang fn and use across situations, everyday life
