NEUROMA
DEFINITION
Also known as vestibular shwannoma
A non cancerous tumor that grows
On the main nerve from inner ear to brain
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION
Ringing sound in the affected ear
Unsteadiness, loss of balance
Dizziness
Facial numbness
Hearing loss
CAUSES
The cause is associated with
Malfunction of gene 22
Exposure of Neck face to radiation
Continuous exposure to loud noise
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Hearing test
MRI
NURSING CARE PLAN
Disturbed auditory perception
Reduce unnecessary environmental noise.
Assess client’s hearing ability. Ask an older child to describe hearing loss
speak in a loud and clear voice and look at the child when talking.
Provide other means of communication eg. Pen and paper
Pain
Give analgesia and anti inflammatries
Nurse patient in comfortable position
Determine cause of pain and treat according
use of a warm heating pad or an ice pack for discomfort
Monitor for relief of pain and any side effects of medication
Loss of balance and dizziness
Assist patient when morbalizing
Encourage rest between activities
Patient should not stand for long hours
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Over production of schwann cells
Gradualy Leads to the formation of a toumor
The tumor then press on the balance and hearring nerve
In the middle ear
Large tumors press on the facial nerve or brain structures
