KERATOCONUS
DEFINITION
cornea bulges outward and downward like a cone.
Often occurs in both eyes
CAUSES
There is no known cause but risk factors
Hereditary
Vigorously rubbing the eye
Pre dispose conditions
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
The conea looses its shape
The clear dome shape front surfaces
Made of clear fluid
Thins out and gradually
Bulges outwards into a cone shape
Leading to interrupted vision
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Computerized coneal mapping
Eye refraction
Keratometry
Slit lamp examination
NURSING CARE PLAN
Pain
Encourage patient not to rub eyes
Give analgesia and anti inflammatries
Nurse patient in comfortable position
Determine cause of pain and treat according
Monitor for relief of pain and any side effects of medication
Administer eye drops if necessary
Impaired vision
Assess patients vision limitations
Do not expose patient to bright light
Assist patient with morbalising
Perform eye examinations
Assist patient with reading
Teach patient on proper eye care
Do not expose patient to bright light
Deficient knowledge about condition
Assess patients current knowledge
on the condition
Explain possible causes of conditions
Address stereotypes and concers regarding condition
Advise patient on ways to prevent reoccurring of condition

Distorted vision
Astigmatism
Double vision
In ability to see blue light
Nearsightedness
Sensitivity to light
Loss of vision
