INTRODUCTION TO BUILDING TECHNOLOGY, HEALTH AND COMFORT

INTRODUCTION

Building Technology
-

Health

  • Indoor environment are very important for the health of people inside the building

Comfort

  • Creating positively pleasurable and healthy living places
  • For example: Temperature, humidity, noise, light

Types of Building

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

GREEN BUILDING
-known as sustainable building, is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated or re-used in an ecological and resource efficient manner

Benefits Of Green Building

-Building in a way that is socially , economically, environmentally, functionally, and aesthetically balanced to meet today's needs and to provide and conserve resources for future generations

Green Building Index (GBI)

  • Malaysia's industry recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment

Objectives of Green Building

Protecting occupant health

Improving employee productivity

Using energy, water and other resources more efficiently

Optimal environmental and economic performance

Satisfying and quality indoor spaces

Social Benefits

Economic Benefits

Environmental

  • Reduce wastage of Water
  • Conserve natural resources
  • Improve air and water quality
  • Protect Biodiversity
  • Reduce operating costs
  • Improve occupant productivity
  • Create market for green product and services
  • Improve quality of life
  • Minimize strain on local infrastructure
  • Improve occupant health and comfort

6 Keys Criteria GBI

Sustainable Site Planning & Management (SM)

  • Selecting appropriate sites with planned access to public transportation, community services, open spaces and landscaping
  • Avoiding and conserving environmentally sensitive areas through the redevelopment of existing sites and brownfields.
  • Implementing proper construction management, storm water management and reducing the strain on existing infrastructure capacity

Materials & Resources (MR)

  • Promote the use of environment-friendly materials sourced from sustainable sources and recycling
  • Implement proper construction waste management with storage, collection and re-use of recyclables and construction formwork and waste.

indoor Environment Quality (EQ)

  • Achieve good quality performance in indoor air quality, acoustics, visual and thermal comfort.
  • Will involve the use of low volatile organic compound materials, application of quality air filtration, proper control of air temperature, movement and humidity

Water Efficiency

  • Rainwater harvesting, water recycling and water-saving fittings

Energy Efficiency

  • Improve energy consumption by optimising building orientation, minimizing solar heat gai through the building envelope, harvesting natural lighting, adopting the best practices in building services including use of renewable energy, and ensuring proper testing, commissioning and regular maintenance

Innovation

  • Innovative design and initiatives that meet the objectives of the GBI.
