Narrative structure & Binary Opposition
Narrative Structure
A storyline that has a flow of information where audiences can understand and bring new perspectives.
There would be a beginning, climax (middle), and an end.
Usually starts with a situation and the ending would either have a resolution or a new situation.
Basic narrative structure suggests that all problems must have a resolution.
Characters
To determine whose the main character in the movie, they are always showing and screen time is always long.
'point of view' encourages identifications between main character and audience.
Virtual connection or experience are based on the camera techniques, editing, and sound effects.
Some of the camera techniques include closeups, long shots of the main characters, or first person view.
Example:
this picture is taken from 'World War Z,' you could see how it only focuses on Brad Pitt and nobody else. So from this, audience could probably guess already that he's the main character.
Sometimes showing the characters details makes the audience to understand better about them.
At times, the female characters in a movie was solely for visual pleasures or a supporting character towards the male character.
Example:
Jumanji - Welcome to the jungle (2017) The female character in this movie was seen as a visual pleasure due to her strength.
Ending/Conclusion
Sometimes, endings can have a cliffhanger that can leave the audience in awe as well as making their own conclusion. However, it may suggest that there may be a continuation of the movie.
There are certain movies that don’t have ending. Movies like this are usually in the genre of
Horror.
For example,
'pengabdi setan' or 'satans slave'
. The ending left many audiences to question on the main character.
Ex: Movies like
Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars
would usually have a cliffhanger in the end of the movie which makes the audience impatient to know more in the next series
There are also movies that end with a plot twist. It's very impactful for the audience as it blows your mind & it makes you remember about the movie. Not only that, it makes u want to repeat the movie
Example:
a great movie like 'The invisible guest' had an incredible plot twist that blowed my mind off due to the fact that the 'lawyer' of the murderer was actually the parents of the victim. Basically, the murderer confessed to the parents instead of the real lawyer.
Binary Oppositions
Two elements that contradict each other.
needs to be another opposing character to go against it in order to generate the impact and resolution.

Ex: 'Split' - the main character
Multiple personality
Conflicting within themselves.
In order to survive and live out their life, they have to choose and embrace one side.
Escapism
Escape from reality or running away from certain problems
Indulge in certain platform like watching dramas, online game, obsessing over EXO, or even wearing makeup
Media has been the tool that we rely on in terms of escapism.
However, sometimes escapism projects negativity as it means individuals are not satisfied or unhappy with their current life thus chooses to escape into imagination instead.
There are certain circumstances where audience tends to relate themselves, usually their ‘ideal’ self in the movie situations. Hence, the development of comic-con or anime events.
Even if escapism is a pleasure but we must be able to come to reality. If not, there's a possibility that a person cannot be sane if they're deeply into the 'fake' world.
