Week 8: Geometric Reasoning
Def
Use of critical thinking, logical argument and spatial reasoning to solve probs and find new relationships
Purpose is to determine results from previously established truths and to then apply these results in the solution of probs. Can also be used to verify or prove results
Importance
Spatial ability not only plays a unique role in assimilating and utilising pre-existing knowledge, but also plays a unique role in developing new knowledge
Without spatial ability, the psychological architecture supporting creative thought and innovative production is incomplete (Kell, Lubinski, Benbow and Steiger (2018, p.1835)
Tahta (1989) -
Proposed 3 powers involved
in working with space
Imagining - seeing what is said
Constructing - seeing what is drawn or saying what is seen
Figuring - drawing what is seen
Vocab to articulate reasoning
Location/position words - on, over, bottom, in front of, by, upside down, between, under
Movement words - up, down, forward, backward, around, through, to, from, toward, sideways, across
Distance words - near, far, close to, far from, shortest, longest path
Transformation words - turn, flip, slide
Curriculum
Year 3 - use rulers
Year 4 - more complicated scaled instruments introduced
Year 5 - Protractors - need explicit teaching of how to use it
Classroom examples
Make an 'Attribute Block Train' and describe positions e.g. partner picks a block that is different in only one way. The difference can be in the shape, size, thickness, or color. Then answer 'starting from the left hand side, describe the position of the first yellow shape, then the fourth circle in the train, 11th shape form the end etc.
Turtle academy - use codes for directional language to create shapes
180 degrees game - tear triangel into three similar sizes, linke up pieces along a straight line with 3 vertices touching, tell yourself the story of how this proves the internal angles add to 180.
Mapping activity - Google Maps give a bird's eye view of fam locations. Move between satellite and map views help sts make connection between diff reps. Extended to other maps such as classroom, fire escape routes, town maps - explore diff reps on maps.
