Mass is measured by using a balance comparing a known amount of matter to an unknown amount of matter. Weight is measured on a scale.

Classroom activities
Dev a sense of mass and of a std unit - find a kilo of potatoes, junk mail, cotton balls, bottle tops, straws, lead fishing weights, socks... objects which have same mass but differing volumes

Relationship between vol and mass well known by bakers and cooks. Butter/marg normally in 500g containers. Recipes call for a measure of butter in terms of volume units e.g. 1/2 cup of butter which is equiv to 125grams. Students explore relationship between mass (grams) and volume (cups) for toher ingredients (oil, flour)
