Frozen 2 Improvements
-
Side Characters
Lieutenant Mattias
Given a firm grasp of his character- older, more sarcastic but still genuinely caring and fully devoted to his duties immediately
Given depth by showing how much he both misses the person he loves and feels guilty that she didn't move on while he was stuck with just a few lines of dialogiue
-
King Runeard
Despite the very small amount of screentime he has, he's very much the most grounded antagonists in the franchise and an actual decent villain- a man who believes his position of power gives him the right to take what he wants and make others suffer for it
Music
Musical Numbers
"All is Found" is a good lullaby with a melody that's soft and cryptically eerie and an excellent tool for foreshadowing what's to come. It also gives us our first hints of Idun's ancestry and the number gives us the chance to see why Anna and Elsa loved their parents so much
"Some Things Never Change" is not only an excellent way to introduce us to where our characters are now: Kristoff wanting to propose, Elsa hoping the good times can last, Olaf growing up and Anna having grown up it also showcases how much more likable the ensemble cast has grown compared to the first movie
"When I Am Older" is not only better slapstick comedy than any of the comedy-centered musical numbers from Frozen, it's also Olafs best musical number because it centers on his difficulties that come into play later in the movie: that he's a growing child who's been thrust into a chaotic situation and is dealing with it the way a kid would- telling themselves that when they get older, they'll understand better.
"Lost In the Woods" is the more potentially divisive number but for those that it appeals to, it's in the way it captures the nostalgic quality from listening to musical numbers from the Disney Renaissance Era and love ballads from the 80's to the point where even the cheese factor feels like a feature instead of a bug due to how much effort and sincerity was poured into it
"Into The Unknown" has an excellent build-up with a good dose of sass from Elsa in verse 1 that leads to wonderfully bombastic choruses and it confirms the point I made in my criticism of the first movie- that Elsa is a character who enjoys and appreciates her freedom first and foremost and who wouldn't be happy being tied down to a position that she didn't ask or get the chance to prepare for
"Show Yourself" feels like a real musical culmination- the lyrics are so much better in terms of someone finally eager to learn the truth and accept themselves, the tune feels like the empowering ballad that it is
"The Next Right Thing" is by far the best musical number in the entire movie because of the sheer weight of the emotions it deals with and conveys: Anna has lost just about everything that's ever mattered to her and she has to press on regardless. It's the most wonderfully adult part of the movie and really showed off the potential of this franchise
Original Score
Much more improved from the original and able to carry some of the biggest moments- like Elsa fully finding out what happened or her taming the water spirit- completely on their own and are memorable as hell to boot

In other words, the movie seems to finally understand that the core of a musical lies in the music and songs and does real work to them as good as possible
Also a huge step up from the one-dialogue mannequins so many of the side characters were in the first movie
Making the characters more competent and their relationships with each other warmer and more familial means that they become likable people that one wants to spend their time with while they go through the plot events
The improved character outfits speaks to how much better the characterisation is in this movie because what a character wears says so much about who they are and the outfits have to (mostly) look good as well as say something about the characters
The use of Elsa's magic in more creative ways and the better looking ice makes her powers feel tangible without taking away from how exciting they are
The improved animation shows the movie willing to move forward to keep up with the times as 3-d animation technology has grown over the years
Gets rid of the problematic part about Idun- that she was a bit character in the fist movie with only one line of dialogue who was otherwise silent and useless
