LSD in use for treating mental health ((The need to open up a discussion…
-
While the new culture in which rationalism and mysticism were intertwined seems far-fetched, Island realistically gives great insight into Huxley’s long-term experimenting with psychedelics: most notably LSD.
Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), or more commonly “acid,” is an extremely potent hallucinogen
The history of LSD is complicated, “rich with failure and controversy,” and is significant to recognizing the potential applications of LSD in psychotherapy as well as the stigma formed around the drug.

But if LSD replicates the features of mental illness, namely early-stage psychosis, how can it improve mental health in the long run?
-
The role of LSD in improving mental health seems to be linked to a weakening or “dissolution of the ego,” and helping individuals see the “bigger picture beyond their personal problems.”
The profound sense of connection produced by this experience has the potential to be beneficial for people suffering from anxiety, depression, and some forms of addiction as one of the reasons why psychiatric disorders are so “hard to shake” is that it's almost impossible for sufferers to view things differently.
Recent studies on LSD seem to revitalize Dr. Cohen’s research, pointing at LSD’s potential in encouraging new ways of thinking and to “reset” habitual patterns of thought.
Dr. Cohen’s experiments allowed the initial perception of LSD to transition being associated with bouts of insanity to potentially benefiting the mentally ill and Cohen's enlightening experience inspired intellectuals like Aldous Huxley.
Aldous Huxley opened up the possibility of LSD to help writers, artists, musicians, and most importantly, for psychologists and anyone who needed help “exploring the unknown world of their own mind.”
It may be time for these drugs to make a “psychiatric comeback” under controlled circumstances as more research is needed to establish just how important they could be as part of an overall treatment program.
These psychedelic drugs need to be legalized, both through scientific drug development studies designed to obtain FDA approval for prescription use and through political means so that they are legalized for medical purposes.
