To Punish the South or Not
People wanted the south to be punished.

Andrew Johnson became president after president Lincoln was assassinated
He wanted to be more lenient of the southern states then Lincoln was.
Black codes
Many southern states began to establish "Blake Codes.
Blacks couldn't vote, go to white schools, owning land, and getting jobs/
Rejoining the Union.
New governments were formed in the south
In order for the states to rejoin the Union they had to ratify the new amendments.

Lincoln wanted the southern states to be allowed back into the union
Any state that was allowed back into the union would have to become a slave free state.

To help the Re construction they added 3 more amendments to the Constitution.
13th: Outlawed Slavery
14th: Said that black people were also part of the United states and all people were protected by the law.
15th: Gave all male citizens the right to vote regardless of race.
Help from the Union.
The Union did a lot for the southern states during the reconstruction.
They were rebuilding roads, farms started running again, and they built schools for poor black children.
Carpetbaggers,
Northern people tried to go to the south to make money when the Union was rebuilding everything.
They were called carpetbaggers because their belongings were packed in things called carpetbags

He moved federal troops to the south and the government took over.
