HYPERADRENOCORTICISM IN DOG (clinical sign (polyuria, polydipsia,…
HYPERADRENOCORTICISM IN DOG
ETIOLOGY
pituitary dependent
most common
commonly cause by adenoma of the pars distalis
Excessive secretion of ACTH causes bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia and excess cortisol secretion from the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex
adrenocortical dependant
Adrenocortical adenoma and carcinoma occur causing increase in cortisol production
Increase of cortisol concentration will suppress suppresses circulating plasma ACTH concentrations,
causing cortical atrophy of the uninvolved adrenal and atrophy of all normal cells in the involved adrenal gland
caused by
Adrenocortical adenoma
carcinoma
iatrogenic
caused by
excessive administration of glucocorticoids to control allergic or immune-mediated disorders
administration of eye, ear, or skin medications containing glucocorticoids, especially in small dogs receiving them long term
clinical sign
polyuria
polydipsia
polyphagia
panting
abdominal enlargement
endocrine alopecia
mild muscle weakness
DIAGNOSIS
complete blood count (CBC)
serum biochemistry panel
urinalysis
with bacterial culture
The ACTH stimulation test to test for iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism
TREATMENT
drugs
mitotane
Lysis of adrenal cortex
trilostane
Inhibition of cortisol biosynthesis
external beam radiation
Adrenalectomy
the treatment of choice for an ATH unless metastatic lesions
