MRS. DALLOWAY
"Virginia Woolf"
PLOT:
•The point of view changes with Septimus in the Regent's park. He is a first world war veteran, who suffers from hallucinations and shocks. For this, Septimus and Lucrezia decide to go to psychiatrist Sir. Bradshaw, who diagnoses "a lock of proportions". So they deciding to close Septimus in a mental institution. Septimus kills himself not to contaminate his soul.
• Mrs. Dalloway's party begins. But during the party the psychiatrist's wife tells Clarissa that a husband's committed sucide. This event greatly affects Clarissa who retires privately to reflect on the death of the young veteran. The story ends with the end of the party.
•Mrs. Dalloway is one of the protagonists. The story begins in one of the usual days of Mrs. Clarissa Dalloway when she was planning her party. During the preparations for the party she meets an old friend, Peter Walsh and they remember their youth.
THEMES
COMMUNICATION VS PRIVACY
•The balance between communication and privacy is difficult for the protagonists to achieve. For example, Clarissa organizes parties, but in reality she cannot communicate and show deep emotions. It is then that she understands and interprets the gesture of Septimus as a legitimate communication act.
DISILLUSIONMENT WITH THE BRITISH EMPIRE
•During the 19th century the British Empire was considered one of the largest and strongest empires. But this idea changes after the WWI, because the empire split and there were many dead. The theme is very important for Septimus. He doesn't believe in the values of the empire precisely because he took part in the war. While Mrs. Dalloway sees the failure of the empire as she sees her personal failures.
THE THREAT OF OPPRESSION
• Oppression is a constant threat to Clarissa and Septimus. It comes in many forms, including religion, science or social convention. Miss. Kilman and Sir. Bradshaw are two of the main oppressors. They both wish to convert the world into their belief systems to gain power and dominate others.
THE FEAR OF DEATH.
• The concept of death and its fear are closely related to the concept of time (in the novel time is often marked by the sound of Big Ben or by individual moments). Death is understood as a confrontation after a difficult life (as the life of Clarissa who sees her family die and for her death is natural and for Septimus death is a kind of rest).
CHARACTERS:
SALLY SETON:
Sally is an old friend of Clarissa and Peter. When she was young she was revolutionary and contrasted with older generations
(she was physically attracted to Clarissa). Now Sally lives in Manchester and is married with five children.
SEPTIMUS WARREN SMITH:
Septimus is a veteran WWI. He is married to an Italian woman, Lucrezia. He suffers from shock and gets lost in his mind. Septimus lives an internal world, where he sees and hears things that are not really there. This is beacuse of what he saw in the war. He is involved in the beauty of the world, but also fears that people have no ability to honesty or kindness. Sepitums is the example of the contrast between the conscious of working class struggle and the upper class. According to Virginia Woolf, septum's represents insane truth.
CLARISSA DALLOWAY:
Mrs. Dalloway is a rich woman married to Rhicard Dalloway, a man who belongs to high society. She constantly struggles to balance her internal life with the external world. Mrs.Dalloway always worries about appearances(the party must be perfect in every detail). She often overlaps the past and the present, she does this to reconcile with her life despite her memories. According to Virginia Woolf, Clarissa Dalloway represents sane truth.
Richard Dalloway
Richard is Clarissa's husband. He is a simple and sensitive husband who loves Clarissa and his daughter Elizabeth. He wants to overcome his rigidity and shyness (try to tell Clarissa that he loves her). Contrary to Septimus, he still believes in the values of the English empire.
Peter Walsh
Peter is an insecure and very critical character towards others, especially for the Dalloways. He blames Richard for the bourgeois lifestyle, which Clarissa has also undertaken. But in reality, Peter agrees to the same English company he criticizes.
The narrative technique:
•The action takes place in one day.
•Stream of consciousness.
•It is a narrative technique thanks to which the narrator brings out the thoughts of the characters. The stream of consciousness brings thoughts as they are, without an order.
•The narration:
•The novel has not only one point of view, but more points of view. (Mrs. Dalloway, Septimus and Rhicard).
