The Roman Republic was a political system which lasted five centuries. After the kings were expelled, power was held by the patricians, the heads of the leing families.

Monarchy:
The first system of goverment in Rome was a monarchy, which lasted from the founding of the city until the 5th century BC. During this period, Rome took the from of a city-state.
The last kings was Lucius Tranquilus Superbus, a very authoritarian ruler. As result, he was overthrow in 509 BC. The Romans then established the Republic, which lasted until 30 BC.
