Sexism is prejudice toward a specific gender, usually referring to females. Sexism is different than homophobia, trans-phobia, or hetero-phobia.

DE FACTO SEGREGATION Leftover segregation in school systems and neighborhoods

Discrimination on the basis of Race is called Racism. Although racism is not limited to the African American population, in America, much racism is targeted at the African American population due to a dark and heavy history concerning slavery.

Xenophobia (The fear of other countries) heavily influencing political moves and individuals thoughts or ideas of a certain group of people.

Sexual Orientation is defined as the gender an individual is attracted to sexually and romantically. I categorized this segment under discrimination due to the LGBTQ+ community who face discrimination and prejudice due to their sexual orientation.

Homophobia is the fear of gay or lesbian individuals. Homophobia contributes to toxic masculinity and vice versa creating an unsafe environment for boys to express their feelings because it is seen as, "gay". The same can be said of sexism.

Trans-phobia is the fear of individuals who have transitioned genders or are in the process of transitioning. Trans-phobia can be manifested in lack of working opportunities, lack of social acceptance, hate crimes, etc. Transgenders face discrimination daily because of their decision to to transition, although many of them feel as though it was not a transition and they were actually born into the wrong body.

Hetero-phobia is the fear of straight, cis-gendered people, This can be sparked by trauma or just a plain distaste for this type of individual.

Poverty cycle

Raised rates of crime in lower income neighborhoods

lack of resources required for personal growth

Contributing to prison systems

The Emotional and Behavioral Problems sections includes issues such as mental health, juvenile delinquency, domestic disputes and violence, etc.

Overall, in America we have a flawed justice system with many problems. Unfortunately, rather than working as rehabilitation as it should, it often creates bigger and more drastic issues for all micro, mezzo, and macro levels. In order to fix it, we will be required to completely rewire our justice system and potentially even look at other countries as a model.

Felons and convicts are released without resources to build a functioning life for themselves

First time offenders of minor misdemeanors returning with larger, more high scale offenses due to an overall lack of resources in the criminal justice system leading to higher rates of crime in neighborhoods

"War on Drugs" initiative feeding into racial stereotypes and further damaging any progress against racism and deepening divides and issues contributing to growth out of the justice system by targeting and incarcerating specific profile of people.

Releasing offenders without proper resources or capabilities to be able to build a functioning life outside of prison walls increasing rates of recidivism

Previously incarcerated persons (regardless of reason for conviction or number of offenses) are required to carry a criminal record which shows up on a background check and limits job options

Bringing awareness to the globe of social issues

There are many ways to participate in social work

Social issues are not always how we originally perceive them, it takes digging to see multiple sides of a story

It is required of a social worker to work to leave behind any bias they may have of and individual or idea

Over the course of this semester, I think I've realized that I want to go into the public educational system. However, this class has shown me how social work is part of that and how important it is to have these skills to be an effective teacher and learner.
