Motherboard Components
Clock
-
a microchip that regulates the timing and speed of all computer functions. In the chip is a crystal that vibrates at a specific frequency when electricity is applied. The shortest time any computer is capable of performing is one clock, or one vibration of the clock chip
RAM
-
-
a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is found in servers, PCs, tablets, smartphones and other devices, such as printers.
Hard drive
-
-
a non-volatile memory hardware device that controls the positioning, reading and writing of the hard disk, which furnishes data storage. Hard disk drives are commonly used as the main storage device in a computer.
ROM
-
-
flash memory chip that contains a small amount of non-volatile memory. Non-volatile means that its contents cannot be changed and it retains its memory after the computer is turned off. ROM contains the BIOS which is the firmware for the motherboard.
Cache
-
Cache is a small amount of memory which is a part of the CPU - closer to the CPU than RAM . It is used to temporarily hold instructions and data that the CPU is likely to reuse.
BIOS
-
-
the program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse and printer.
BUS
-
a communication system that transfers data between components inside a computer, or between computers. This expression covers all related hardware components (wire, optical fiber, etc.) and software, including communication protocols.
The Graphics cards
-
a piece of computer hardware that produces the image you see on a monitor. The Graphics Card is responsible for rendering an image to your monitor, it does this by converting data into a signal your monitor can understand
The NIC
-
-
A NIC controls the wired and wireless connections of a computer to exchange information with other computers and the Internet.
