Enation occurred in both Zosterophyllophyts and Lycophytes. However, enations on Lycophyts were larger and contained a single well developed trace of vascular tissue.
Vascular cambium in Equisetophytes evolved independently from vascular cambium in Lycophytes. Oddly enough, they both suffered from the same defect. The defect did not allow their fusiform initials to undergo radial longitudinal division.
Fossils show that early gametophytes were very elaborate and over time have evolved, by means of reduction and simplification, to become the way they are today.
